SENIOR MEDICAL/HEOR WRITER, MEDICAL COMMUNICATIONS
Job Summary
Our Senior Medical/HEOR Writers provide research and writing support to assigned brand teams and new business efforts. They work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including medical directors, editors, graphic designers, and account personnel, by providing research and writing support. Project deliverables include abstracts, scientific posters, oral presentations, outlines, primary and review articles for professional journals, detailed slide decks, infographics, web-based and social media materials, meeting reports, strategic communications platforms and gap analyses, graphical/video abstracts, plain language summaries, and other materials requiring sound clinical judgment, a deep understanding of real-world evidence and economic models, and excellent writing skills. They are responsible for developing high-quality, scientifically rigorous content across multiple therapeutic areas that aligns with strategic communication objectives of pharmaceutical, biotech, and/or medical device clients. Level of experience, ability to train other writers, and ability to effectively partner with medical/HEOR directors to create efficiencies justifies the senior role.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Providing research and writing support to assigned brand teams on a wide range of publications involving clinical and HEOR studies, including those involving real-world evidence, patient-reported outcomes, and economic modeling
- Working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes a medical/HEOR director, editor, graphic designers, and account personnel to accomplish project goals
- Consulting with creative, medical/HEOR, and varying internal teams to conceptualize and develop images, diagrams, animations, or interactive assets for assigned projects and/or new business pitches
- Developing high-quality written materials that are scientifically accurate, fully referenced and annotated, appropriate to the target audience, and that meet the authors’ communication objectives, client specifications, and industry guidelines
- Incorporating feedback and revisions and addressing reviewer questions/comments
- Understanding team/company expectations in terms of budgeted hours and deadlines, and communicating with the team regarding these as needed
- Interacting with key experts to solicit their input, facilitate alignment, resolve queries, and make constructive suggestions about content
- Developing and maintaining in-depth knowledge in relevant therapy areas, including disease state, treatment guidelines, drug mechanisms of action, product efficacy and safety profile, and competitive landscape
- Being an active participant in and occasionally leading client meetings for assigned teams, and collaborating with medical directors and account leads
- Providing onsite support for activities such as advisory board meetings, symposia, and medical congresses
- Applying feedback from Medical/HEOR Director, writing mentor, and authors within and across projects
- Participating as an active team member in providing strategic recommendations and contributing to continuous quality improvement
- Providing mentoring/training to less experienced writers
- Assisting in the development of project proposals and other new business development initiatives as needed (eg, background, lit searches, faculty recommendations, biography updates, etc.)
- Representing OPEN Health at selected congresses and society and client meetings as needed
- Following standard operating procedures (SOPs), including annotating and updating of project files, routing, and version control conventions
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
- A strong scientific understanding (MD, PharmD, PhD) and excellent writing skills
- 5+ years of experience with a medical communications agency, or equivalent communications agency; prior experience writing real-world evidence studies required
- Ability to perform medical/HEOR literature searches and produce high-quality medical/HEOR writing independently and based on direction supplied by a medical/HEOR director
- Superior communication skills (both written and verbal) with a proven ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in a clear, accurate, and innovative way for a variety of audiences Desire to be in a dynamic role involving mentally stimulating assignments

- Independent interpretation of scientific statistics, clinical trial documents, real-world data or health economic analysis study reports, and other primary data source materials, as well as published medical/HEOR literature
- Ability to manage multiple and sometimes competing challenges and priorities with the ability to delegate, problem solve, and set clear expectations
- Openness to accept constructive feedback from the medical/HEOR director, authors, and clients and implement it across your projects
- Experience synthesizing and interpreting data from multiple sources
- High comfort level interacting with clients and authors/thought leaders
- Flexibility to effectively work across multiple therapeutic areas
- Willingness and ability to work both independently and in a team structure
- Ability to perform all duties remotely and online, as OPEN Health is a paperless company
- Enthusiasm, team-player attitude, self-motivation, and professional demeanor
- Proficiency with PubMed searches and MS365 programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams), including figure and table development. EndNote experience is a plus!
