Senior Medical Director
Job Summary:
The Senior Medical Director provides strategic medical leadership across assigned accounts, ensuring scientific excellence and consistency in all deliverables. As the medical lead, they set direction for content development, guiding Medical Writers/Directors and Creative teams, while reviewing and refining outputs throughout the project lifecycle.
Beyond driving quality, this role mentors colleagues across the medical team, fosters growth, and builds internal capabilities. They are accountable for project-level medical budgets, proactively escalating resource needs, and partnering to identify effective resourcing solutions.
As a trusted strategic partner, the individual brings scientific insight to client engagements and collaborates closely with Client Services to optimize account performance. They engage confidently with clients and external experts, contributing to account growth, profitability, and new business opportunities (including pitches and RFPs).
This position requires a balance of independence and collaboration, combining thought leadership with a proactive, solutions-focused approach to delivery, strategy, and business development.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Scientific Content (Visual and Written)

Collaborating with medical writers (and/or other medical directors, editorial, and creative team members as applicable), providing client-ready deliverables, and ensuring the work of others meets quality standards and industry guidelines

Delegating work and providing clear and actionable feedback

Overseeing content development on a wide range of complex projects across multiple accounts/therapeutic areas

Demonstrating proficiency in reviewing scientific content

Guiding the decision-making process in data analysis

Strategic Perspective and Guidance

Offering proactive strategic recommendations to the team

Participating in strategic planning meetings with clients and offering tactical recommendations based on these activities

Demonstrating the knowledge of product scientific messaging within the competitive space and scientific tactics

Demonstrating a working knowledge of pharmaceutical industry standards and compliance

Partnering with Client Services in strategic planning efforts, and account/issues management

Client Engagement and Influence

Building, maintaining, and leading scientific relationships/communications with physicians, and guiding others to develop this skill

Effectively moderate/facilitate client sessions

Leading client interactions concerning strategic or tactical planning processes with the client

Internal Team Engagement and Influence

Overseeing short-term and long-term medical resourcing needs; participating in resourcing discussions with VP/SVP team members; escalating the need for additional resources; resolving resource needs

Partnering closely with Client Service team members using a collaborative approach that optimizes communication, efficiency, team culture, and profitability

Mentoring and training Medical Team members; serving as a role model

Serving in a leadership role for internal training initiatives

Managing direct reports. Monitoring their workload and making proactive recommendations to the medical Senior Management team regarding plans for anticipated temporary/ongoing periods of underutilization or overload

Approving and monitoring their timesheets, expenses, and PTO requests

Meeting regularly to assess progress, status of annual objectives, career development, team dynamics, and interpersonal issues, and troubleshoot any problem areas in a timely manner

Conducting regular performance evaluations

Enforcing compliance with all company SOPs
- Business Development

Working with team/Client Services to develop organic growth opportunities, showing an understanding of the business model for COE, and leading client interactions concerning medical support

Serving as Medical lead for business development initiatives with existing and new clients

Supporting regular business reviews of key accounts to ensure internal alignment on opportunities and plans to drive growth

Fiscal Responsibility

Providing feedback on scientific aspects of budget development

Managing >$2M in revenue to maintain or expand revenue across accounts
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications:

MD, PharmD, or PhD degree
-
5+ years of experience with a medical communications agency, education company, pharmaceutical company, or clinical equivalent

Exceptional oral and written communication skills
-
Experience in developing medical and marketing concepts through critical analysis of data, distilling complex technical information for a variety of medical audiences, and medical editing

Understanding of industry guidelines and standards governing the dissemination of scientific data

Ability to meet deadlines while working on multiple, parallel projects

Advanced knowledge of program features used in professional content development, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat

Strong leadership and decision-making experience, skills, and competencies

Strong knowledge of clinical development processes and life cycle management for pharmaceutical products
