Senior Account Director-PMED, Client Services

Job Summary

The Senior Account Director owns the account portfolio at the highest working level below executive leadership — setting strategy, holding the P&L, and being the name clients and internal leadership both call first. Internally, the Senior Account Director is the definitive voice of the client across every level of the business, from project teams to the Vice President. With the client, they operate at the executive-relationship level: the trusted advisor who sets direction, owns the room, and is relied on to resolve what no one else can.

A successful Senior Account Director drives the complete account cycle end to end across a multi-account portfolio, and is accountable for its growth, profitability, and competitive position. They build and scale the internal team — including Account Directors — that delivers best-in-class strategic communication plans, and partner with the Medical Lead to ensure every deliverable is scientifically rigorous, strategically sharp, and competitively positioned in the market.

  • Account Direction & Growth — Sets and owns the strategic plan across the portfolio, with direct accountability for the outcome of every assigned project; partners with Senior Management to drive revenue and profitability growth; proactively secures new business to expand the portfolio; brings a command of the account that lets them get ahead of problems — recommending alternative solutions, improvements, and contingency plans before a need arises
  • Team Management — Leads and mentors staff, including Account Directors, as the standard-bearer for the team’s performance; builds a culture that pushes personal and professional growth; delivers direct, consistent coaching that raises the capability of everyone on the account; holds the team to on-target, on-time, on-budget delivery, no exceptions
  • Account Resourcing and Operations — Proactively directs staffing and operational planning to keep current and prospective business running at full capacity; reads patterns in performance, teamwork, and process to drive concrete improvements in agency profitability, resourcing efficiency, market competitiveness, and client satisfaction
  • Financial — Owns the financial integrity of the portfolio: ensures accurate, timely invoicing and reconciliations; drives SOW development so scope is locked before work starts; issues change orders the moment scope shifts; keeps every account fully compliant with corporate standards; drives the monthly client finance conversation and proactively converts unused project funds into new work and fee
  • P&L Support — Co-owns P&L management with the Vice President, ensuring monthly client finance tracking stays tightly aligned with the account P&L
  • Content & Product Knowledge — Serves as the final quality gate ensuring every project is scientifically sound and strategically on-target; partners closely with the Medical Lead on strategic and scientific direction; stays fluent in the therapeutic literature and client data; ensures content positions the client competitively within the market landscape
  • Client Communication & Satisfaction — Partners with the Vice President to build and own client relationships from day-to-day contacts through executive leadership; operates as the senior strategic lead who keeps the team focused on the big-picture view of the brand and business; attends brand strategy meetings to shape account direction and guide the team
  • Training and Development — Builds the bench across the business unit — trains and develops Project Directors, Project Managers, and Project Coordinators to run and sustain operations
  • Other — Takes on additional duties in support of the organization as directed by the team Vice President
  • Support an annual operating budget of contract revenue: $2MM–$2.5+MM
  • Oversee 3–4+ accounts (dependent upon scope)

  • Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree a plus
  • 9+ years in medical education, with proven business development results specific to medical communications management
  • Familiarity with a variety of therapeutic categories; specific therapeutic area expertise a plus

  • Experience developing and establishing new service offerings to grow the account organically; actively seeks out external opportunities for new business
  • Maintains contacts and access to key decision makers across pharmaceutical clients
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, as well as presentation skills
  • Proactively communicates account and team status in a consistent feedback loop with the team Vice President
  • Proven ability to effectively manage people, both individually and as a team
  • Excellent judgment, with clear, concise problem-solving and decision-making skills when interacting with clients, team members, and healthcare professionals
  • Ability to manage multiple, sometimes competing, challenges, issues, and priorities, with the ability to delegate and set clear expectations
