Executive Vice President (EVP), Medical & Scientific Services, Medical Affairs

Location: Remote US

Job Summary

The EVP, Medical & Scientific Services, Medical Affairs will lead the strategic direction and operational execution of the company’s medical and scientific initiatives. This role is pivotal in driving the overall medical strategy to align with the objectives and ensuring the integrity and quality of all medical and scientific content and maintaining the highest standards of client service.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Developing and implementing a comprehensive medical and scientific services strategy aligned with the company’s mission and objectives.
  • Leading a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals, scientists, health economists, and medical communications specialists to ensure excellence in all client deliverables.
  • Serving in a thought leadership capacity through active contributions to key industry societies, as well as internal mentoring and training of medical and scientific staff.
  • Fostering relationships with key opinion leaders in the industry to enhance the visibility and credibility of the company’s scientific contributions.
  • Demonstrating excellent communication and presentation skills; contribute to COE and company-wide presentations and engage confidently with medical affairs industry leaders.

Financial Performance:

  • Supporting strong financial performance, including revenue growth, profitability, and cost management.
  • Contributing to the development and management of annual budgets, including detailed medical and scientific hiring plans.
  • Assisting in implementing strategies to achieve revenue, gross margin, and profitability targets.

 

Client Relations:

  • Acting as a key, executive-level point of contact for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Establishing and maintaining key client relationships in the industry and providing senior-level subject matter expertise as needed to ensure robust strategic recommendations and highest quality medical and scientific deliverables.
  • Assisting in soliciting and regularly evaluating client feedback to ensure highest levels of client satisfaction and overseeing any required action plans should quality issues arise.

Team Leadership and Resource Management:

  • Directly manage VP- and SVP-level medical and scientific staff, as well as VP of the COE’s health economics writing team.
  • Leading, mentoring, and developing a high-performing medical and scientific team, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment.
  • Promoting professional development and continuous learning opportunities for staff.
  • Ensuring alignment of team goals with organizational objectives.
  • Carefully monitor and assess team performance and help to set annual performance goals.
  • Developing and monitor staff budgets and implement processes to ensure optimal allocation of resources; work collaboratively with centralized services (eg, editorial, digital, creative) to optimize working practices and ensure deliverable timelines are met.
  • Identifying opportunities for cost efficiencies and improvements in service delivery.
  • Developing strategies to support employee engagement and retention.

Compliance and Quality Assurance:

  • Ensuring compliance with industry regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Maintaining high standards of quality assurance and ethical conduct in all operations.
  • Monitoring and addressing any compliance or quality issues proactively.

Business Development:

  • Working in partnership with the executive leadership team, including the EVP Growth Strategy, and the OPEN Health Group Commercial team on business development efforts to attract new clients and retain existing ones.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to integrate medical insights into product offerings and business development strategies.
  • Identifying and pursuing new revenue streams and service offerings.
  • Participating in industry events, conferences, and meetings.

Innovation and Technology:

  • Championing innovation and the adoption of new and emerging technologies.
  • Identifying opportunities to leverage technology to enhance service offerings and operational efficiency.
  • Encouraging a forward-thinking mindset and exploring cutting-edge solutions to meet client needs and stay ahead of industry trends.
  • Driving the development and implementation of innovative strategies to create new revenue streams.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • MD, PhD, PharmD, or equivalent advanced degree in a life sciences field.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in medical affairs, medical communications, and/or publications, or related fields, preferably within agency, pharmaceutical and/or biotechnology industries.
  • Experience in health economics and outcomes research- and/or real-world evidence-focused strategy and communications is a plus.
  • Proven track record of successful leadership and management in a senior executive role.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong client relationships.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Travel Requirements

  • 15% potential travel, primarily US-based
