Job Summary

As a leader of their assigned accounts, the Account Director is responsible for driving strategic direction, operational excellence, and client satisfaction. This role serves as a trusted advisor and key contact for clients, as well as a vital liaison across internal teams, ensuring seamless execution across publication planning and medical affairs deliverables. Account Directors are empowered as key decision makers, expected to exercise sound judgment and take ownership of outcomes that impact both client success and internal performance. The ideal candidate is a proactive and highly responsive leader, known for anticipating client needs, swiftly addressing challenges, and cultivating high-performing teams. Expert knowledge and facilitation of industry guidelines is essential, along with an ability to assess scientific content at a cursory level. Account Directors should bring a track record of organic growth, demonstrate comfort in supporting new business efforts, and possess strong financial acumen across all aspects of client account management.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Account Director is responsible for leading assigned client accounts (publication or medical affairs focused). Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as main client and internal lead, ensuring work is meeting client expectations and lead meetings as appropriate
    • Have solid understanding of client SOPs, preferences, and database management systems, as appropriate
  • Partner with AVP/VP/SVP and Medical Director to drive strategy of account
  • Cultivate relationships with targeted clients, and identify and lead organic growth opportunities while bringing in other departments as needed
  • Drive financial accountability of assigned accounts to ensure profitability
    • Manage SOW development, forecasting, invoicing, and potential overages
  • Assist with new business development efforts as requested (RFIs, RFPs, pitches) as well as identify new work and communicate to senior leadership
  • Mentoring and coaching direct reports, as applicable
    • General training of account to new hires and new additions to the team
    • Coordinating out of office coverage with team, as applicable
  • Able to manage day-to-day project tasks as well as delegate appropriately to other team members to ensure timelines are kept and quality deliverables achieved
  • Have a solid understanding of assigned account therapeutic area/product

Experience, Skills, and Qualifications

  • BA or BS in marketing, communications, biology, life sciences, or related field (candidates with CMPP certification is a plus)
  • Minimum of 8 years of direct involvement with pharmaceutical marketing, publication planning, medical affairs, promotional medical education, business development in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, or senior management and account responsibility in a medical communications or marketing services company
  • Proven business development results
  • Experience developing and establishing new products and service offerings
  • Highly successful relationship initiator and builder with a resilient personality that capitalizes on every opportunity presented
  • Experience in publication and medical affairs management for pharmaceutical clients
  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and partnership skills with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Professional and confident approach with excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills and an outstanding attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment while maintaining a "can-do" attitude and a strong sense of ownership, pride and accountability
  • Effective organizational and multi-tasking abilities with ability to prioritize and balance workload, meet timelines, delegate, and problem-solve
  • Proficiency in MS365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. Experience with Sharepoint, Salesforce, SAP, iEnvision, and Veeva Vault is a plus
